  • 1½ pounds ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion
  • ½ cup finely diced celery
  • ½ cup finely chopped green pepper
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup catsup
  • ½ teaspoon Tabasco
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 to 6 toasted hamburger rolls, buttered

  1. Brown the beef in the butter and break it up well with a fork. Add the onions, celery, pepper, seasonings, and water. Cover and simmer, adding more liquid if it gets too dry. Correct the seasoning. Spoon onto toasted buns, and if you want, add a bit of chopped green parsley or chopped green onion.

Jimmy may not have been a fan of Sloppy Joes, but when I'm in the mood for them, this recipe is the one I always use.
