Sophie is the inspiration for “Sophie” in the children’s classic The BFG by Roald Dahl, her grandfather. Her grandmother was actress Patricia Neal. She is the daughter of actor Julian Holloway and writer Tessa Dahl. Her paternal grandfather was actor Stanley Holloway.
Sophie Dahl is an author, cook, television host, and former model who lives and works in the United Kingdom.
She is the author of three books, one of which is a cookbook. Her illustrated novella, The Man with the Dancing Eyes, was a bestseller in England. It was followed by Playing with Grownups, which was followed by her first cookbook, Miss Dahl’s Voluptuous Delights. Her second cookbook and fourth book will be published in 2011.
Sophie is hosted a six-part cooking series on the BBC2 called The Delicious Miss Dahl, which she wrote as well as hosted.
She is a contributing editor for British Vogue and also writes regularly for Waitrose Food Illustrated. She has contributed to The Saturday Times Magazine, The Daily Telegraph, and American Vogue. For three years before it folded, she was a contributing editor for Men’s Vogue.
Sophie modeled for fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Vogue, Visionaire and W, and has also been featured in advertising campaigns. She worked with iconic photographers including Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Bruce Weber, Peter Lindbergh and Steven Meisel. She was cast as the face of Yves Saint-Laurent’s Opium perfume and one of the ads, in which she posed nude on black satin, was removed from UK billboards after complaints from the public.
She wrote the introductions for two Puffin Classic new editions of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and Nightingale Wood by Stella Gibbons.
She is a patron of the Roald Dahl Museum and Store Centre in Buckinghamshire, UK, and supports a number of charities including The Place2be, First Story, and Break Through Breast Cancer.
In 2013 Dahl designed and modelled a capsule collection for Brora. She lives in the English countryside with her husband and two daughters.
