Notes

Rumor has it that Irish coffee was first served in the bars on San Francisco’s wharves. Whether this is true or not, the practice of a little nip in the coffee has become a warming habit, no matter what the time of day. Unlike the flood of liqueurs with their johnny-come-lately coffee tricks, Irish coffee is the most straightforward of all coffee concoctions and is a perfect way to end a meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon superfine sugar
  • 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey
  • 5 ounces hot espresso coffee
  • 1 heaping tablespoon unsweetened whipped cream
  • 8-ounce goblet or mug

Directions

Warm the glass with boiling water and shake dry. Place the sugar and whiskey in the glass. Add the espresso and stir to dissolve the sugar. Float the whipped cream on top.
